*As a (hopefully) weekly Friday feature, I will share a few great things that made me happy this week. It’s purposefully an open-ended category so that I can incorporate books, music, film, personal happenings, people, stories etc.*
1. This band and this music video.
I sort of have a thing for couples who produce music together. Maybe it’s because you trust that the lyrics are genuine and likely about each other. But Us & Our Daughters totally fits that category for me. Singer/songwriters Phillip LaRue and his wife Lia produced an album about their relationship that includes the song below– and it’s adorable. How can you not love those longing looks, romping in fields, and precious babies?
2. This movie.
My mom and I went and saw Beasts of the Southern Wild this week and absolutely loved it. It’s an artistic film that’s narrated by a 6-year-old girl called Hushpuppy who lives with her father in a southern bayou community. It’s a mixture of fantasy with stark reality of poverty, with a lot of gaps that are filled by a 6-year-old’s understanding of the world. If you like Zora Neal Hurston or Toni Morrison, it’s like a visual representation of one of their novels. You can watch the trailer here.
3. This article.
I highly recommend A.A. Gill’s piece in Vanity Fair “Can Weddings Be Saved?”. It’s well-written, hilarious, poignant, and not in-your-face about a particularly controversial political issue. Give it a read.
